This spectacular Rose Hall Great House is an early 18th-century plantation home located at a high elevation on thousands of acres in Rose Hall, Montego Bay. Annie Palmer, famous and certainly one of the most vicious plantation owners to walk Jamaica, once owned the Great House of Rose Hall. She owned hundreds of enslaved people. Annie Palmer managed to kill three of her four husbands; the fourth strangled her. This house became haunted after her gruesome death in 1831. The view of the house is scary, even during the day. There will be no stop at Rose Hall Great House en route to the Green Grotto and Dunns River Falls, but your guide will explain the history and slow down to allow for photos.

Pass by: Greenwood Great House is nearby.

The Greenwood Great House was built in the early 18th century. Like most, if not all, of the other great houses in Jamaica, the Great Greenwood House was built at a high elevation as a strategy to overlook the plantation. Unlike the Great Rose Hall House, this house is not haunted but has a calmer and more relaxed atmosphere. The history and architecture of the house are what will captivate you. As you drive past, feel free to take pictures when your guide slows down.

Pass by Columbus Park

The town of Discovery Bay is where you’ll find Columbus Park, where the Spanish, led by Christopher Columbus, landed when they arrived on the island on May 4, 1494. The bay was initially named Puerto Seco (Dry Harbour) by Christopher Columbus because there was no fresh water to drink. However, fresh water was found 5 miles east of the city. The water was so good there that the Spanish named the place Rio Bueno, meaning “Good River.” The town of Puerto Seco was later renamed Discovery Bay in 1947 as a tribute to where Columbus landed. There is a park with an open-air museum with several artifacts. Unfortunately, the park is temporarily closed due to reconstruction.

Stop at Runaway Bay

Runaway Bay is naturally beautiful and undoubtedly one of the most picturesque places in Jamaica. It lies between a beautiful, lush coastline on one side and lush green mountains on the other. There is much debate about how the town of Runaway Bay got its name. Some say it got its name because it was where the last Spanish soldiers fled as they retreated after the British invasion of Jamaica in 1655. Others say it was simply the point from which enslaved people from inland plantations fled to Cuba.

Stop at: Green Grotto Caves

The Grotto Caves and River Falls Package is 1,525 meters long and 12 meters deep and features numerous chambers and an underground lake called Grotto Lake. Green Grotto Caves Jamaica is surrounded by dense vegetation and fed by pristine waters flowing from its secret depths. The central element of this natural attraction is a large labyrinthine limestone cave with unique rock formations, stalactites, stalagmites, bats, and a wishing well whose depth no one knows. When you arrive at the site, prepare for an hour-long journey into this underworld magic with your local guide, which will surely leave you captivated! All elements of the cave are still in their original state. This green grotto cave in Jamaica has provided scenes for movies such as “Live and Let Die” and many others. It is a unique tour that will make your vacation unforgettable.
Duration: 1 hour, including ticket.

Stop: Dunn’s River Falls and Park

A rare experience awaits you at the world-famous Dunn’s River Falls with Grotto Caves, where you climb the falls in a human chain under the guidance of experienced Falls Guides. Dunns River Falls with Grotto Caves is the perfect environment for fun and relaxation for the whole family. There is a unique discovery around every corner. Your friendly guide will escort you to the beach where the tour begins. The total climb from the beach to the summit is approximately 600 feet (183 meters). There are pools along the way where you can stop for photos and frolic. Allow the cascades to embrace you as you make your way up. Stop by the “massage salon” and experience the soothing effects of the water flowing over you. There are exit points along the way if you want to stop. If so, meet the rest of your group later. For the less daring, live vicariously through others. View the more adventurous activities from the “safe” spot of the patio or deck.
