This spectacular Rose Hall Great House is an early 18th-century plantation home located at a high elevation on thousands of acres in Rose Hall, Montego Bay. Annie Palmer, famous and certainly one of the most vicious plantation owners to walk Jamaica, once owned the Great House of Rose Hall. She owned hundreds of enslaved people. Annie Palmer managed to kill three of her four husbands; the fourth strangled her. This house became haunted after her gruesome death in 1831. The view of the house is scary, even during the day. There will be no stop at Rose Hall Great House en route to the Green Grotto and Dunns River Falls, but your guide will explain the history and slow down to allow for photos.
The Greenwood Great House was built in the early 18th century. Like most, if not all, of the other great houses in Jamaica, the Great Greenwood House was built at a high elevation as a strategy to overlook the plantation. Unlike the Great Rose Hall House, this house is not haunted but has a calmer and more relaxed atmosphere. The history and architecture of the house are what will captivate you. As you drive past, feel free to take pictures when your guide slows down.
The town of Discovery Bay is where you’ll find Columbus Park, where the Spanish, led by Christopher Columbus, landed when they arrived on the island on May 4, 1494. The bay was initially named Puerto Seco (Dry Harbour) by Christopher Columbus because there was no fresh water to drink. However, fresh water was found 5 miles east of the city. The water was so good there that the Spanish named the place Rio Bueno, meaning “Good River.” The town of Puerto Seco was later renamed Discovery Bay in 1947 as a tribute to where Columbus landed. There is a park with an open-air museum with several artifacts. Unfortunately, the park is temporarily closed due to reconstruction.
Runaway Bay is naturally beautiful and undoubtedly one of the most picturesque places in Jamaica. It lies between a beautiful, lush coastline on one side and lush green mountains on the other. There is much debate about how the town of Runaway Bay got its name. Some say it got its name because it was where the last Spanish soldiers fled as they retreated after the British invasion of Jamaica in 1655. Others say it was simply the point from which enslaved people from inland plantations fled to Cuba.
